High-impact news is where most beginners lose money fastest: spreads widen, slippage grows and price can jump through a stop loss. The good news is that the dates are known in advance.

1. Check the calendar every morning

Open the economic calendar, filter to the currencies you trade and look for the red (high-impact) events. Note their time in your own time zone.

2. Stay flat around the release

Avoid opening new trades 5–15 minutes before and after the release. If you trade a prop-firm account, this is often a rule — events marked Restricted show it.

3. Protect open trades

Either close part of the position, move the stop loss to break-even, or reduce your size before the news. Never remove a stop loss to “survive” the spike.

4. Trade the reaction, not the number

Let the first spike settle. Wait for price to return to a level from your plan and for a clear confirmation candle — then trade with your normal risk.

Rule of thumb: if you would not be comfortable with the trade gapping 30 pips against you, do not hold it into high-impact news.
